"Thatcham" - properly called the 'The Motor Industry Repair Research Centre' write the specification for security products, Electronic and Mechanical. Funded by the Insurance Industry, it's in their interest to get it right! Generally accepted as the most stringent security  tests in the world, the specification is almost 200 pages long. Tests include over-voltage, reverse voltage, heat, cold, vibration, humidity, salt mist, electrostatic discharge. The list is very long, and very thorough!
